A dark night on a long winding road of the hills of Garhwal somewhere in the Kumaon region...popularly known as the Valley of Flowers...but at 1 am in the dead of the night, more like the valley of ghosts..
The rains have just washed the roads. Slippery twisting, narrow..but the fragrance of the enticing Raat ki Rani( night blooming jasmine)is the life Savior, it just distracts the mind away like a seductress playing with our senses.
The smell of Geeli mitti..of the wet mountains..of the green grass...of the valley itself...all this intertwined and intoxicating our senses with its sheer divine fragrance. There were so many different feeling to this new amalgamation of nature's smells.
It felt exotic, like something created from a different world. It was filled with so many notes- wooden , floral, jasmine, the fresh mist, the wet mud and what not smells of the mountains .The mental visual just needs some light to turn into an equally mesmerizing visual delight. The break of dawn will dispel all fears and just overwhelm us with the beauty that seems enveloped in the darkness of the night.
Such is the power of our nose..and a little imagination.
An impulsive plan by four friends to get away from the madness of Delhi into the hills of Kumaon seems to be leading us literally by its smell. Its our first trip to Almora..an unplanned sojourn into a new land of the wild and untamed. Funnily, the GPS doesn't work when one needs directions..so getting lost at midnight was a bit scary.
What's more funny however is the comfort from "This-new-whiff -of exotic-natural-mix-of-amazing smells-of nature" that we were experiencing. Its a new land, a different terrain ,an unsuitable time and an unreliable weather. We are at the mercy of nature and in that kind of situation getting high on any smell no matter how pleasing is just insane! But then, that is how the stories of our life are created. Its about how the unexpected becomes so significant.
The pleasure from the trip couldn't get any close to the pleasure that we got from the smell of this concoction of these flavors of nature. None of us could get over that sweet scent, nature is afterall the ultimate creator of everything nice. I wish it could be bottled and replicated all around me.
